She managed to sleep a little on and off after Pete called Trevor informing them the surgery went well. They cleaned it and saved a substantial section of the patella. Memories of the accident haunted her all night. The laughter she and Amanda shared in the minute before the collision. The sight of the injury. The condition of the facility.

The sun just began rising when she stepped out on the porch and texted Pete. He replied immediately. He wrote that Amanda did rest some. He on the other hand did not. She let him know she would dress and head over there and he could come to the resort to shower and rest. It shocked her when he asked her to bring drinks and food. She didn’t want to ask him a bunch of questions she could get answered when she got there, so she texted she would.

Returning inside, she heard the low snores from Trevor. She hoped he woke soon. She could call for a taxi, but she didn’t know their schedule. Glimpsing the time on her phone as four forty-five, she wondered if the taxis operated that early. Taking the note from the top of the basket left by the door the night before, she read it. And it made her cry.

Renee wrote how sorry she was about the accident. She repeated for Sophia not to blame herself. But how could she not? Renee apologized for raising the topic of the wedding, but with all the arrangements made and the guests in attendance, she couldn’t postpone it. Most everyone had flights departing the following day. She wrote she planned to go and visit with Amanda before the wedding. And she organized for food to be taken to Amanda and Pete afterward.

The reality in the second portion of the note upset Sophia and launched a full-blown bawling attack. The basket contained the polishes for her fingernails and toes. It included the sarong for her to wear tied at her waist with her turquoise bathing suit. A beautiful floral garland headdress rested at the side of the basket wrapped in tissue paper. They were to meet in the pool house at four p.m.

All the bridesmaids except Amanda were to meet. The wedding pictures wouldn’t have Amanda in any of them.

Trevor rushed her from behind capturing her in his arms. “What is it? Has something else happened?” he pleaded into her neck, his chin resting on her shoulder.

Gasping a few times, she tried to speak. “I…I can’t. I can’t do thi--,”

Reaching around her, he took the note out of her hand and read it. He never loosened his hold on her. Placing it on the counter, he coaxed, “Yes you can. I know you can. You are one hardheaded, determined woman. And I will be right there with you.” Spinning her to face him, he stroked her face and cupped her chin. The tears started again as she gazed into his understanding and accepting, warm eyes. “Let’s do this one thing at a time.
